This project is aimed at developing an interdisciplinary teaching module in which students identify, analyse and share promising practices relating to sustainability issues. The rationale behind this is that environmental problems are often presented as overwhelming and complex, which can lead to pessimism and a sense of helplessness among students. 

At the heart of the project is an accessible, modular website featuring an interactive map. Students add examples of sustainable initiatives to this platform and analyse them from ecological, social and economic perspectives, thereby creating a growing, student-led narrative of hope.

Goal of the project

This project develops an interdisciplinary teaching module in which students identify, analyse, and share hopeful practices in sustainability across ecological, social, and economic domains.  

It pursues two goals:  

1. Education: creating an active learning environment where students contribute to knowledge on sustainability and hope  

2. Organisation: strengthening interfaculty collaboration around societal challenges.

Interdisciplinary approach

The project is interfaculty and will be piloted in:  

• Science for Sustainable Societies (FWN)  

• Leiden University College, specialisation Earth, Energy and Sustainability (FGGA)  

This allows comparison between a focused sustainability programme and a broad liberal arts context, offering insight into how different students engage with hope and sustainability. Collaboration is co-creative: the module is jointly designed , and students engage through a shared platform that enables continuous interdisciplinary interaction.
