Men with a Mission: Informal Accountability Practices

How did nineteenth century scholars evaluate each other and each other’s work through more or less informal practices of peer review?

Duration
2013 - 2018

This project consists of a series of case studies on informal exchanges amongst scholars in different disciplines.

This project focuses on the correspondence networks of nineteenth century German scholars in the humanities and sciences to provide an overview of the development of processes of peer review in the broadest sense of the word, ranging from early examples of editorial peer review to privately shared judgements about the work and character of one’s colleagues.
