Recent years have seen numerous politically and ideologically biased crimes occurring throughout Europe. These crimes can be seen as an indicator of poorly managed conflicts in society. This project addresses the occurrence of such conflicts in light of the recent migration influx in European countries. As part of this European project, at ISGA we study the public discourse regarding the nexus between migration and political / ideological biased crime throughout the Netherlands.

 

In studying this nexus, we are taking a closer look at not only obvious cases such as extreme right violence against migrants and refugees, assaults on synagogues, attacks on asylum reception centers, but also on less obvious cases, such as attacks on sexual minorities.

 

Over the course of 6 months (2017), we undertake open-source data analysis, making visible the status quo of politically motivated crime in the Netherlands, in light of current migration flows.

This report studied the possible nexus between migration and political and ideological biased crime throughout the Netherlands. We conducted open source data analysis for the period 2012-2016 and found that there was no significant rise in political and ideological biased crime related to migration.
