We first examined how the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance and hydrogen bonds in tripodal squaramide monomers influence polymer properties. Then we presented a cartilage-like double-network (DN) hydrogel that supports chondrocyte growth and ECM production. Following this, a phenol-crosslinked DN hydrogel with cartilage-mimicking properties was developed. Afterwards we incorporated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into DN hydrogels, improving mechanical properties and enabling a photo-thermal effect for cancer therapy. The final section summarizes findings and suggests future research on squaramide-based materials for 3D cell culture applications.
