The book offers an in-depth thematic commentary on the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, one of the most significant recent developments in EU digital regulation. It analyses the Act’s core provisions and broader legal themes, including prohibited AI practices, high-risk AI systems, governance, enforcement, AI literacy, codes of conduct, and the interaction between the AI Act and other EU digital laws such as the GDPR, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. The volume was published on 14 May 2026, has 728 pages, and is available in hardback and electronic formats.

Several eLaw members and Leiden Law School colleagues contributed chapters to the Commentary. Gianclaudio Malgieri authored the chapter on the objectives of the AI Act and co-authored the chapter on the right to explanation with Margot Kaminski, as well as a chapter on the interaction between the AI Act and the Digital Services Act. Maria-Lucia Rebrean co-authored the chapter on prohibitions related to human vulnerabilities and manipulation; Bart Custers authored the chapter on predictive policing and facial recognition; Gavin Robinson authored the chapter on biometric surveillance and its exceptions; and Melanie Fink authored the chapter on human oversight.

The Commentary brings together academics, practitioners and institutional experts to provide guidance for scholars, regulators, policymakers, legal professionals and students seeking to understand and implement the AI Act. It reflects eLaw’s strong expertise in AI regulation, fundamental rights, data protection and the broader EU digital rulebook.
