This expansive tome, which is intended as an informative resource for students and scholars alike, marks the Fourth Edition of the oldest major treatise in this field, Dinah Shelton’s International Environmental Law (Brill). Together with colleagues from the University of Geneva, Dr. McGarry integrated 20 years of extraordinary legal developments to bring this new edition up to date.

In his view, this series stands out for its pioneering and inclusive approach to the field, including interactions between environmental protection and military activities, economic development, and human rights. Referring to the co-editors’ aim for the latest edition, Dr. McGarry recalled that “a major distinction is that the book is now accessible and highly useful to a wider readership, including through more globally diverse and comparative perspectives on the evolution of environmental law”.

Recalling the time he spent completing this book, Dr. McGarry was particularly proud to have worked closely with graduates of the Law Faculty’s LL.M. program in Public International Law on the substantive revision of individual chapters, as well as students at Leiden University College who assisted with formal aspects of the publication process.
