Daniëlla Dam-de Jong appointed Chair of the CAVV and Member of the Netherlands National Group of the Permanent Court of Arbitration
Dam-de Jong has been appointed Chair of the Advisory Committee on Public International Law (CAVV) and a member of the Dutch National Group of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, with effect from 1 September 2026. In recent years, she has already served on the CAVV as a regular member.
The CAVV is an independent body that advises the government, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Netherlands on questions of international law. The Committee consists of ten experts in international law and may provide advice both on its own initiative and on request on legal questions which centre on the interpretation of international law and the perceived need for such law to be developed. Dam-de Jong succeeds Cedric Ryngaert (Utrecht University), who will remain on the committee as a regular member.
The Dutch National Group consists of four members. The members are also members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and, as such, may be called upon to act as arbitrators in the settlement of inter-state disputes. Furthermore, the National Group may, via the Minister for Foreign Affairs, nominate candidates for election as judges at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. Finally, at the request of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the group may put forward a candidate for election as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, or as a member of the United Nations International Law Commission.
Daniëlla Dam-de Jong is a professor of international sustainable development law and director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Leiden University’s centre of expertise in international law.
