Scoping Review: the Contributions of Open Science to Research Culture
Report
In a new report commissioned by Science Europe, CWTS and the Know Center review academic and grey literature to examine how open science practices contribute to research culture.
Commissioned by Science Europe, the report titled “Scoping Review: the Contributions of Open Science to Research Culture” is the result of a collaboration between the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University and the Open and Reproducible Research Group at the Know Center. It explores the contributions and unintended consequences of open science in realising results that align with key research culture values such as equity, openness, integrity, care, collaboration, and autonomy, with the aim of informing future policy and research agendas.
Alex Rushforth, lead consultant at CWTS, comments on the new report: "We are grateful to Science Europe for their support on this significant project. As open science expands and matures, it is important to build up the evidence base of what works in different circumstances, providing open science policymakers and practitioners opportunities to understand, monitor and adjust where necessary. Our centre CWTS, Leiden University has been at the forefront of calls to evidence open science, so it was a great pleasure for us to work with colleagues at Know Center to produce this report mapping open science's many contributions to research culture."
Bregt Saenen, Senior Policy Officer at Science Europe, says: "This report offers a valuable and timely insight into the academic evidence underpinning open science policies and practices developed by Science Europe’s member organisations. We are proud to share this contribution with the community and are thankful to CWTS and Know Center for their partnership in this effort. We see this report as part of the renewed commitment to strengthening the monitoring and evidence base for open science. As the community’s ambitions grow, international initiatives such as OSMI, GRIOS, the Barcelona Declaration, and CoARA, and action across all levels will be essential to advance the insights found in this report."
