Vasiliki Kosta lectures on cultural diversity at EUI Summer Course on “The Law of the European Union”

Dr. Vicky Kosta (Europa Institute, Leiden University), together with Professor Niamh Nic Shuibhne (University of Edinburgh), provided a course on “Cultural Diversity and European Law” at the EUI’s Academy of European Law two-week summer course in June 2023.

Each year, the European University Institute’s Academy of European Law offers an advanced-level two-week summer course, offering a challenging and stimulating learning experience for a selected cohort of doctoral students or other stakeholders of EU law.

This year’s summer course was in honour of Bruno de Witte, Professor Emeritus at Maastricht University and Visiting Fellow at the EUI. Six specialized courses were offered, with each course focusing on a specific topic under the overarching theme of the “fundamentals of EU law” and celebrating the immense contribution of Professor de Witte to the field. For this special edition, the EUI brought together two imminent experts for each topic to create and provide each course. Over three days, Dr. Vicky Kosta and Professor Niamh Nic Shuibhne provided a course on “Cultural Diversity and European Law", reflecting on the Cilevičs case of the Court of Justice, and exploring the issue of cultural diversity from an EU constitutional law perspective.

The course convenors were Gráinne de Búrca, Claire Kilpatrick, Joanne Scott, and Neil Walker. Neil Walker also provided the general course on “EU Law as a Utopian Project”.

The summer course was attended by Carina van Os and Sinéad Mulcahy, PhD candidates at the Europa Institute.
