Moritz Jesse Speaks at CES Conference in Lisbon

Moritz Jesse, Associate Professor at the Europa Institute Leiden, spoke at the 28th International Conference of Europeanists ‘The Environment of Democracy’ organised by the Council for European Studies (CES) at the ISCTE Institute of the University of Lisbon from 29 June – 1 July.

The Panel ‘The Others Amongst Us – Otherness and Law in Europe after the Pandemic and  Brexit’ reflected in how far processes of othering in law, as identified in an edited volume on the issue (Jesse, CUP 2020), have changed with the two aforementioned events, which left their mark on European and global history. Together with co-panelists Dora Kostakopoulou (now University of Leuven) and Sonia Morano-Foadi (Oxford Brooks University), Moritz Jesse reflected on free movement within the EU after the pandemic. Altogether the panel identified several instances of policies, which, deliberately or not, other immigrants in the EU and which were exacerbated by Brexit and the global pandemic.
