A Harmonised EAC COVID Pass to Re-Kindle Intra-Regional Trade
COVID-19 poses a significant barrier to intra-regional trade within the EAC, causing interminable hold-ups at the internal borders.
A particular trade impasse is ongoing on the border between Kenya and Uganda. To curtail this, the EAC has decided upon the adoption of a harmonised EAC Pass, a common EAC COVID-19 certificate enabling cross-border travel. Importantly, this is hoped to work because the underlying rules on vaccination and testing have themselves been harmonised. This is proof that technological solutions are necessary to fulfil regional integration.
