ASEAN in ASEM

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) published different statements regarding the Summits of the Asia-Europe Meetings (ASEM).

Regarding the 12th Summit of the ASEM meeting, the ASEAN countries stated that they support the further work on connectivity, which should be pursued in the framework of the future Senior Officials Meetings based on the ASEM Pathfinder Group on Connectivity’s (APGC) final report. The aim of this is the exchange of information and the improvement and planning of ASEM-wide Connectivity activities.

Regarding the 13th Summit of the ASEM meetings, ASEAN makes clear that the importance of this partnership between Asia and Europe in strengthening dialogue and fostering action-oriented cooperation, based on consensus, equal partnership, mutual respect, and mutual benefit to advance further a robust, inclusive, and open multilateralism capable of addressing global and regional issues, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, is evenly essential.

Both summits and statements can be found here and here and show the will of the ASEAN countries to develop an even stronger relationship with Europe regarding countries connectivity. Mainly the aim to strengthen multilateralism in the context of global and regional challenges, sustainable and inclusive Economic Recovery and Growth and social and cultural links show that the regional organisations try to connect more on the ASEM level to solve global problems starting on a regional level.
