Key political players in Covid-19 pandemic to testify

More than six years after the first Covid-19 infection, key political players are being questioned to draw lessons from the pandemic period. Wim Voermans, Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law, commented on ‘EenVandaag’: ‘Many unanswered questions remain.’

The parliamentary inquiry, the most powerful instrument of the Dutch House of Representatives, is used to examine how the cabinet and the House of Representatives arrived at decisions during the Covid-19 pandemic. The inquiry will look at the decision-making, considerations and the consequences for healthcare and fundamental rights. It will also examine whether the House of Representatives was sufficiently critical of the government. In addition to the key political players, such as former prime minister Mark Rutte and former minister of Health Hugo de Jonge, MPs and (medical) advisors will also testify.

According to Wim Voermans, the aim of the parliamentary inquiry is to reveal how these political decisions came about. ‘Many unanswered questions remain, also since a lot of information from that time that we'd like to take a good look at is still confidential.’ In his view, the inquiry is an investigation we can definitely learn from. According to the professor, more thought should be given to parliamentary oversight and how fundamental rights – such as the freedom to demonstrate and the freedom of movement – are handled.
