How is power negotiated between researcher and participant? Is the knowledge produced in that relationship confidential by default, or can it be designed for (more) openness? Does the ‘bureaucratic ritual’ of informed consent build trust, or undermine it? And when is consent ethically and legally valid?

This lunch session is about values: what we owe the people we work with, what they entrust to us, and how that shapes what we can share afterwards. Consent can be a co-creative conversation that deepens trust and widens the possibilities for sharing and reusing data. You don’t need any technical background, or any form to fill in.

The session is open to anyone in the Humanities whose research involves people. That includes interviews, experiments, fieldwork, recorded conversations, questionnaires, and corpora built from social media, archives or messaging apps. You might be drafting your first consent form, preparing an ethics application, or wondering whether data you collected years ago can be shared now.

Bring your project, a consent form that gave you trouble, or just your appetite: lunch is provided!

We want to hear how you get consent in the lab, in the streets, on social media, under the influence, between friends, from public figures, in whatever style and format gets results. There are no silly questions, and best practices are eagerly welcomed.
