The Leiden Centre for Intercultural Philosophy is pleased to announce a lecture by Prof. Mohammed Rustom, Professor and Director of the Carleton Centre for the Study of Islam, Carleton University Canada.
There is much discussion today on the need to diversify the discipline of philosophy. Yet this often translates into a familiar kind of response whereby the value of “foreign” philosophical traditions is acknowledged, but only insofar as their achievements can be measured against the supposed universal standards of evaluation dictated by Western philosophy. Challenging this form of intellectual myopia, this lecture will introduce a new sourcebook in global philosophy that puts the normativity, depth, diversity, and creativity of non-Western philosophical traditions front and center.
