About the panel
On 1 November 2024, the canopy of the railway station in Novi Sad, a town in northern Serbia, collapsed, killing 15 people in the middle of the day. The event triggered a broad student-led mobilization initially centred around narrowly defined demands to the state institutions to investigate the event and hold those involved accountable. As the state failed to meet the demands, the protest grew into the largest one in Europe since 1968. Seven months later, the list of demands has expanded to challenge the regime at its core, and the outcome of this challenge is deeply uncertain.
Why have the students in Serbia been successful in mobilizing citizens at such a scale? What has the protest achieved so far and what effects can we expect in the short- and long-term? Are there any lessons that we can learn from the protest in Serbia for the global struggle for defending democracy? Please join us in this roundtable debate that aims to discuss these and other questions.
