Reporting guidelines and their impact on papers, practices, and patterns in biomedical research

Abstract
In addressing the transparency crisis in biomedicine, metascientists developed and distributed over 600 reporting guidelines. Although standards have always been an integral part of modern science, such checklists for writing scientific publications suggest an unprecedented level of proceduralization and formalization. So, what happens if such guidelines meet the often complex and uncertain research practices? How do procedural standards change knowledge production and communication on a broader scale? In this talk, I want to present qualitative and quantitative perspectives on the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA). Considering PRISMA as an example of successful science reform, I want to share recent perspectives on the standardization of science and discuss how standards reshape broader patterns of scientific practice.
