1. What is dialectometry? Why dialectometry? (27th February)
In the first half of the workshop, we will try to use the traditional method to classify dialects, i.e. drawing isogloss maps in order to seek dialect boundaries. After assessing the pros and cons of the isogloss approach, I will introduce what dialectometry is and explain how it can overcome some of the problems which the isogloss method has. The workshop will end with a brief history of the field.
