Isoglosses have been used by dialectologists to separate different dialect variants on a map, but that is more to that! By looking at the synchronic patterns (isogloss configurations, which is static), we can infer possible pathways of change (how the dialects changed from one relative time point to another, which is dynamic). This is closely linked to how variants are diffused from one place to another. Are big cities always the origin of innovations? Do variants spread to neighbouring localities all the time? These questions will be answered during the workshop.
