Global Asian Studies (MA)

About the programme

The one-year master's programme Global Asian Studies, a specialisation of Leiden University’s MA in Asian Studies, allows you to create a tailor-made programme by choosing from a broad range of thematic, disciplinary or regional electives.

Course overview

For examples of courses offered as part of the new Global Asia specialisation starting in 2026-2027, see check the prospectus of the History, Arts and Culture, and Politics, Society and Economy specialisations, which will be merged and replaced by the Global Asia specialisation starting September 2026.

Semester 1

The first semester consists of the compulsory core course Introduction to Asian Studies that all students of the MA in Asian Studies have to take. You must also choose two or more core elective courses that introduce the issues, debates and methodologies of one of the disciplines within Asian Studies.

Semester 2

In your second semester you will take one or two electives for a minimum of 15 EC, or fulfill this partially by an internship, and write your MA-Thesis (15 EC).

Critical Heritage Studies of Asia and Europe

If you have a special interest in heritage studies, it is possible to focus on Critical Heritage studies of Asia and Europe within the History, Arts and Culture programme. Inspired and supported by the Asian Heritages research cluster of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), these courses allow you to explore the contested character of all representations of culture, the plurality of notions of heritage in Asian and European contexts, and the way distinct and conflicting values of indigenous, local communities and official state discourses are negotiated.

My time at Leiden University was truly transformative. Studying abroad exposed me to new ways of thinking, a diverse academic environment, and meaningful multicultural experiences. I met lifelong friends, and I was surrounded by professors and lecturers who were not only academically accomplished but also kind, supportive, and genuinely committed to our growth.

While the study experience was fantastic, I will admit I was not sure what direction my career would take afterward. I explored different paths—working as a purchasing manager, gallery assistant, CEO assistant and now as a career advisor. Each role has challenged me and helped me grow, even outside academia.

There were times I wondered whether my degree still held value since I did not continue into academia. But looking back, I realize the mindset I developed at Leiden—the curiosity, critical thinking, and openness—continues to influence me every day. It shaped not just my career, but who I am. That, for me, is the true legacy of my education.

On a separate note, I met the most important person in my life while studying at Leiden University - my husband. So for both of us, time in Leiden is priceless.
