Gender and Sexuality in Society and Culture
Categories of gender and sexuality are the subject of heated debates in our everyday lives. To understand how systems of gender and sexuality operate, and why these are such contested areas we need to study these categories came about historically.
This minor tackles some of the most controversial and contested questions of our time. Why is gender such a contested topic in contemporary politics? How do assumptions of gender and sexuality influence our thinking about “race”? We answer these questions with the help of historical and contemporary debates, covering key concepts such as gender performativity, racialization, and intersectionality, and academic fields such as black feminism, queer theory, and transgender studies.

Minor Gender and Sexuality in Society and Culture

“The Gender and Sexuality in Society and Culture minor was a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to both the foundations of, and the current debates in, the fields of gender and queer studies. Apart from just introducing theory, it enabled me to practice applying it to cultural objects. The strong emphasis on student engagement fostered a thriving community around the program and meant I was looking forward to each and every seminar.”
