Material Culture Studies
Education
The programme’s courses deal with current approaches in material culture theory, advanced methods and techniques from the exact sciences employed in artefact studies, and experimental archaeology.
Studying the life cycle of inorganic artefacts
The focus of the course programme lies on studying material technology from source to finished object integrating archaeological and experimental approaches with advanced methods and techniques from the exact sciences. Students will get acquainted with the advantages, pitfalls and practical implementation of macroscopic, microscopic and chemical techniques in archaeological research.
Laboratory tutorials
We specialise in provenance studies of various raw materials and wear trace analysis, using primarily microscopic and chemical analytical techniques. Students acquire these skills and expertise through specialising courses and laboratory tutorials. The Laboratory for Materials Science, Technology and Culture closely cooperates with national and international institutional partners.
