Sustainable Societies

How do you engage society to stop biodiversity loss? How do you create political and social involvement to deal with climate change? And how do you balance the economic needs of industry with the negative effects of pollution? If you find these kinds of questions interesting, then this Pre-University Class is for you!

At this moment, there are serious changes in our climate and environment that impact the sustainability of the global natural systems that all life, including ours, depends upon. The global climate is rapidly changing, there is a decline in biodiversity, water shortages, and the loss of fertile land. These issues do not affect everyone equally: poorer communities and low-income countries often suffer the most from environmental change, while contributing the least to it. To work effectively towards a more sustainable society, we need to look at these changes from different angles with an interdisciplinary approach. This approach means using the knowledge and methods from different fields of study (disciplines) to understand and find solutions for these problems. In this Pre-University Class, you'll dive into how science and society must work together to tackle today’s biggest sustainability challenges.

You will attend lectures from teachers in various fields such as ecology, environmental sciences, and anthropology. You will also work with your fellow students on a group assignment(s) and have an excursion.

This Pre-University class is offered by the interdisciplinary BSc programme, Science for Sustainable Societies.
