Yiran Ding is PhD candidate at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. As a phonetician, Yiran investigates the "dynamics of dynamics" in speech processing: the first “dynamics” refers to temporal dynamics—fine-grained neural and behavioral time courses captured via EEG and behavioral (Eye-tracking) measures during speech perception and production; the second concerns dynamic perceptual adaptation, particularly speech perceptual learning, whereby listeners rapidly and dynamically re-calibrate phonetic representations to optimize comprehension in variable input. This research integrates EEG, behavioral paradigms with naturalistic designs to uncover the real-time neural mechanisms underpinning this unique plasticity—seeking a mechanistic, temporally precise account of how humans efficiently extract meaning from the ever-changing speech stream.
