Research

Tristan de Jonge is a PhD candidate in Educational Sciences at Leiden University and works within the MakeSpace project. His research focuses on spatial reasoning, examining the cognitive processes that underlie spatial reasoning and how these insights can be used to design effective learning opportunities in primary education. In doing so, he contributes to strengthening the connection between cognitive science and educational practice.

His research builds on theories from cognitive psychology, with a particular focus on learning with images and videos, digital learning, and the cognitive processes that support effective learning. Central to his work is translating scientific insights into practical applications for education. Through the MakeSpace project, he aims to bridge cognitive science and educational practice by translating insights into effective learning opportunities for spatial reasoning in primary education.

Since 2026, Tristan de Jonge has been a PhD candidate in the Educational Sciences research group at the Institute of Education and Child Studies, Leiden University. As part of the MakeSpace project, he investigates how insights from cognitive science can be translated into effective learning opportunities for spatial reasoning in primary education.

Prior to starting his PhD, Tristan worked as an educational researcher at Utrecht University, where he conducted eye-tracking research on cognitive processes during learning from instructional materials. He obtained both his Bachelor's degree and Research Master's degree in Educational Sciences from Utrecht University (cum laude).
