Ton van Kalmthout's teaching assignment is the international exchange of Dutch literature in a historical perspective. He is also a senior researcher in literary history at the NL-Lab of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam. He conducts research into the import of foreign literature into the Netherlands and the export of Dutch literature abroad, including through translations and adaptations. Van Kalmthout has a special interest in literature for and about Dutch emigrants who, since the nineteenth century, and especially after the Second World War, left the Netherlands in large numbers to settle in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Palestine/Israel.
