Tina Bougag is a PhD researcher in Arabic linguistics, with a particular interest in language contact, dialectology, multilingualism, and linguistic practices in diaspora contexts. Her research explores the interaction between Tunisian Arabic (Maghrebi Arabic) and Egyptian Arabic (Mashreki Arabic) in the multicultural and multilingual context of Paris, France. Tina is interested in how speakers of these two Arabic varieties interact with one another, how their linguistic practices evolve through contact, and how they perceive and talk about this contact.

Research

The first part of my research focuses on the linguistic dimensions of contact between Tunisian and Egyptian Arabic. I examine phonetic, morphosyntactic, and lexical features in order to understand how contact between the two varieties may be reflected in speakers' everyday linguistic practices.

The second part looks at discourse and linguistic accommodation. More specifically, I investigate when and in which interactional contexts accommodation between Tunisian and Egyptian Arabic speakers occurs. I am interested in the ways speakers adapt their linguistic practices during interaction and in the social and conversational factors that may influence these processes.

The third part of my research examines metacommentaries, focusing on speakers' beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes towards language. I explore how Tunisian and Egyptian speakers talk about their own varieties and about the variety of the other group, and what these comments reveal about their perceptions of linguistic contact, identity, and language ideologies.

I regularly participate in conferences, workshops, and academic events related to linguistics, Arabic dialectology, language contact, migration, multilingualism, and the humanities.

My recent academic activities include participation in CALL 54 and CALL 55 in Leiden, as well as Moving Humanities at the University of Groningen (November 2024), African Series in Leiden (October 2024), and Migration and Societal Change in Utrecht (June 2025).

In March 2025, I gave a talk at the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris. In February 2026, I also presented my doctoral research during a research study day at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco.

Together, these three perspectives allow me to approach Arabic language contact not only as a linguistic phenomenon, but also as a social and interactional process shaped by speakers' perceptions and experiences.
