Research

Suzan van de Velde is the 2024 Byvanck fellow at the Faculty of Archaeology. Her research focuses on Greek and Roman statuary, the reuse of sculpture in ancient Rome, and the impact of the influx of Greek art on the city of Rome. Suzan also has a broad interest in archaeological theory (in particular human-object interaction and agency), museology and the reception of Classical art.

Curriculum vitae

Suzan holds a BA and MA (cum laude) in Classical & Mediterranean Archaeology, both obtained at Leiden University. In 2023, Suzan completed her PhD at Leiden University, which was supervised by Prof. dr. Miguel John Versluys and Prof. dr. Eric Moormann, and part of the NWO Gravitation program 'Anchoring Innovation'. Her PhD research investigated the introduction and impact of Greek statues in Republican Rome through an archaeological perspective. She studied the appropriation of such ‘non-local’ statues, and the shock of the new that society experienced, from an object perspective, by analyzing the biographies of some specifically selected individual statues. As such, her research explored how Greek statues became integrated into the city of Rome and how their appropriation was connected to change and innovation in Roman society.
