Biography

Róisín Lambert is a PhD candidate within LUCAS at Leiden University, where their research explores the intersections of race, visual culture, and play in late 19th- and early 20th-century America. Their dissertation, Worlding the Nation through Newspaper Cartoons (1870–1924), examines how illustrated periodicals and comic strips caricatured Chinese immigrants as racialized objects of play. Part of the ERC project WORLDING AMERICA, their work draws on play theory, performance studies, and Asian American history to analyse how visual and narrative play staged and enforced racial boundaries, while also tracing forms of counter-play enacted by Chinese immigrants themselves.

Before beginning their doctoral studies, Róisín graduated cum laude from their MA program in Arts and Culture. Their broader interests include visual propaganda, popular media, and the cultural politics of representation. They are also passionate about teaching and strive to bring historical archives into conversation with contemporary debates about race, belonging, and the inner mechanisms of hegemonic power.
