After graduating, with a MA in archaeology at Leiden University, in 2009 Roderick acquired a position in commercial archaeology. During those ten years he has been able to develop himself into a field director. In that function he is responsible for leading the excavation team and the various specialists. Through that position it was possible to gain a lot of hands-on experience with several fields of archaeology that were not part of his educational specialization in the Roman period.
The commercial setting did not, however, always allow for in depth analysis and scientific research. In order to still be able to do so he has joined several (inter)national societies to keep up with the recent developments in the academic field, and dedicated his spare time to the study of various archaeological themes, culminating in several papers and in presentations at various (inter)national conferences. That allowed to further hone the research skills and work together with academic researchers. The inspiration and energy drawn from these activities has taught that research at an academic level is his ultimate ambition.

With this position for a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Archaeology an excellent opportunity has arisen for him to pursue this aim. His present occupation has provided with ample opportunity to familiarize with the vast corpus of archaeological and specialist reports that has been published on Roman archaeology in the Low Countries. Even Romanisation, the topic of the PhD research, could be incorporated in those archaeological reports. The scattered reports written in various commercial reports and articles will be brought together and this will culminate in a dissertation on Romanisation in the Netherlands, based on the comparison of various case studies and sites.
