Research
This PhD project examines how nationalist ideas emerge and take shape in Moroccan Malḥūn poetry from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Malḥūn, a vernacular poetic tradition that is usually transmitted orally, provides a rich body of material for studying how communities understood belonging before and after the rise of modern nationalism in the 1930s. Using only the eleven anthologies compiled and published by the Royal Academy of Morocco, the research investigates how poets conveyed ideas of collective identity, attachment to place, political authority, religious legitimacy and moral community.
