My research is focused on an investigation of the philosophical and historical roots, implicit founding presuppositions and argumentative structure of the concept of wilderness, and its practical application in Dutch wildlife conservation projects. The first part of my dissertation will focus on the historical roots and the philosophical conceptual structure of our current wilderness concept. The second part will take a more practical approach. By studying several wilderness areas, as denoted by Natura 2000, this dissertation will investigate to what degree the idea of wilderness poses practical problems and solutions to wildlife management.

Norbert Peeters is a PhD student at Leiden University’s Institute of Philosophy. He holds a BSc in archaeology, a BA and an MA in philosophy, from Leiden University. Since 2014, he is writer of popular science and philosophy, with focus on botany and the history of botany. Together with prof. Th.C.W. Oudemans he wrote Plantaardig: vegetatieve filosofie (2014). In 2016 his debut Botanische revolutie: de plantenleer van Charles Darwin was published, which was nominated for the shortlist for the best nature book in the Netherlands (Jan Wolkers Prijs). After this he has worked on several books and edited volumes. In June 2019 he started working on his PhD project that focuses on wilderness evaluation in Dutch nature conservation.
