More information about Noortje Marres

Noortje Marres is Professor and Research Director at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies at Warwick University and Visiting Professor at CWTS.

She received an MSc and MA in Sociology and Philosophy of Science and Technology from the University of Amsterdam (both cum laude), and conducted her doctoral research at that same university and at the Ecole des Mines (Paris) on issue-centred concepts of public involvement ("No issue, no public"). She has also contributed to the development of digital methods for social research, in particular issue-network analysis (www.issuemapping.net).

Noortje's research develops an object-centred, pragmatist approach to public engagement in technological societies, including through funded research on everyday forms of material participation (in projects on sustainable homes and driverless cars). She has published three books: Material Participation (Palgrave, 2012/2015), Digital Sociology (Polity, 2017) and Inventing the Social (Mattering Press, 2018; with M. Guggenheim and A. Wilkie).

At CWTS, Noortje collaborates with colleagues to a) develop practice-based, inventive methodologies for detecting interdisciplinarity, and b) design alternative altmetric measures for evaluating societal contributions of science and innovation, combining social media and other data ("heterogenous couplings").
