Michels joined the Institute of Private Law, Department of Notarial Law as an associate professor on 1 December 2024.
Michelle Michels studied Law at Leiden University (2013-2017) and obtained her bachelor’s degrees in Notarial Law and Tax Law in 2017. She obtained a master’s degree in Notarial Law in 2018 (LL.M. cum laude). From 2018 onwards, she worked at this institute as a PhD candidate researching the implications of multi-parenting for the position of the child in inheritance law. Michels defended her PhD thesis and obtained her PhD in 2025.
For her thesis, Michels researches the impact of intentional multi-parenthood on inheritance law and inheritance taxation in two scenarios. First, it examines the inheritance rights of children within multi-parent families under the current legal system, which restricts legal parenthood to two individuals. Second, the research explores potential complications that may arise in inheritance law and the Inheritance Tax Act if a legal framework for multi-parenthood would be implemented, as recommended by the State Committee.
Michels teaches various subjects in the field of personal, family and inheritance law in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Notarial Law. She also supervises bachelor's and master's theses.
