I am a PhD candidate working on Dr. Heeren's NWO VIDI project 'The speaker in speech - the interdependence of linguistic and indexical information’. The project’s goal is to investigate which aspects determine the speaker-specificity of speech sounds, which is essential information for forensic speaker comparisons. My PhD research deals with how and why the speaker-specificity of acoustic-phonetic features depends on whether the first or second language is spoken.

Research

My research investigates how the speaker-specificity of speech sounds depends on the language spoken. I study whether differences in speaker-specificity in the first and second language arise as a result of differences in the speaker’s knowledge of the language and/or as a result of articulatory ease. The focus of my project is on segmental speech features, filled pauses, and hesitation behaviour in spontaneous and read speech. For this, I use speech samples from the Longitudinal Corpus of University College English Accents (LUCEA) of Dutch speakers speaking Dutch and English.
