Marta Dias Da Silva Morgado Pereira is a PhD student at the Centre for Linguistics. I am deaf and sign language is my first language. In Portugal, I was a portuguese sign language teacher for deaf children. Many of my students were from different African countries and I have been working in partnership with Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde.

Research

My PhD is part of a larger research project “From Gesture to Language”, supervised by Victoria Nyst. I focus on the size and shape signs of two village sign languages in western Africa (Adamorobe, in Ghana, and Bouakako, in Côte D´Ivoire). In Portugal, I have been teaching deaf children at a deaf school. My master was also in Portugal on deaf education and Portuguese sign language.

1997 – 2018 teacher of Portuguese sign language at a deaf school (kindergarten to high school).
2004 – 2013 teacher of Portuguese sign language, deaf literature, deaf studies and deaf pedagogy at some universities in Portugal.
