More information about Marlies van Boekel

Marlies participates in the Pre-PhD trajectory at the Dual PhD Centre investigating the possibilities of a PhD dissertation about the position of Dutch inhabitants at the German border during the Third Reich based on a personal history.

In her investigation she will on the one hand try to establish if the mechanism of exclusion of an almost similar group - the Dutch nationals living at the border in Hitler Germany - might clarify the mechanism of exclusion in a climate of polarization in general. On the other hand there will also be attention for the responses from the Dutch themselves to the polarisation. In her research she will use History and Emotion as a point of departure.

In the 70s Marlies has studied Spanish language and literature at Leiden University. The subject of her thesis was based on the ideas and the engagement of the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier: ‘La sociedad ideal y el papel del individuo’ (The ideal society and the role of the individual). She now works as a sworn interpreter and translator of Spanish in court and for the Ministry of Justice.

She holds a second master degree in fine arts at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in the Hague. As a visual artist based in Leiden she is focused on her immediate surroundings or themes of human interest through painting, drawing, photography and video art. Her work has been acquired for the collection of Museum De Lakenhal. Recently her photobook ‘Reflections in Leiden’s Singelpark’ was published by Uitgeverij De Muze.
