Translational Neuro Oncology
The outlook for brain tumor patients is often still very bleak. There is a desperate need for novel treatments and diagnostic appraoches.
Translational Neuro Oncology aims to develop novel treatment and diagnostic approaches and to bring these to patients. The ultimate goal is to improve the outcomes of brain tumor patients.
Academic career
Marike Broekman graduated from Medical School and Law school at Utrecht University. After her PhD research performed at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School she obtained her PhD from Utrecht University. The title of her thesis (2006) is: AAV vectors as gene delivery vehicles in the central nervous system’. She specialized as neurosurgeon at University Medical Center Utrecht and did a post-doctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. After specializing, she worked as consultant neurosurgeon at University Medical Center Utrecht and as visiting professor at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Since 2018, she has been working as consultant neurosurgeon at Haaglanden Medical Center/ Leiden University Medical Center
Broekman is member of the board of the European Association for Neurosurgical Societies. She is the president of the Scientific Board of Kika (Dutch foundation for pediattric oncology), and vice chair of the Council for Medical Sciences of the Royal Dutch Academy for Sciences. She is an editorial board member of the medical journals Acta Neurochirurgica and Brain and Spine.
