Marie Robin is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs , where she coordinates the War and Peace Studies track of the MSc in Crisis and Security Management and is a member of the War, Peace and Justice research group. Marie Robin is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs , where she coordinates the War and Peace Studies track of the MSc in Crisis and Security Management and is a member of the War, Peace and Justice research group. Her research addresses revenge in international relations, the strategic uses of emotion, propaganda, and the ethics of war. She is also Research Associate at the Centre Thucydide (Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas), and a member of the editorial committee of Le Rubicon.

Her doctorate, awarded in cotutelle by the Centre Thucydide and the Center for War Studies at the University of Southern Denmark, examined the strategic value of vengeance narratives in jihadist propaganda - Islamic State, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram— and was awarded the Prix de thèse of the Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas. She holds a Master’s in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action from the Paris School of Intenrational Affairs (Sciences Po). 

Her recent monograph La vengeance et la paix (CNRS Éditions, 2025) develops a theory of vengeance running from Greek antiquity to Gaza, and asks how it might be reckoned with in the construction of a just peace. She edited Moyen-Orient: Comment sortir de la guerre? (Le Rubicon / Éditions des Équateurs, 2024), as well as The Changing Fights and Fighters of Contemporary War. From the Margins to the Middle (Palgrave MacMillan, 2026, co-edited with Amelie Theussen and Kerstin Carlson) and has published on the ethical status of propagandists in the Review of International Studies (2024) as well as in Confluences Méditerranée, the Annuaire français de relations internationales, The Handbook of Terrorism Prevention and Preparedness, De Gruyter Handbook of Cyber conflict and warfare, and The Conversation. Her current research extends these lines of work to the role of revenge in post-violence justice mechanisms in the Mediterranean and to the affective foundations of strategic culture.

La vengeance et la paix has since been widely discussed in Le 1 Hebdo, on France Culture and RFI, in Politique étrangère, on NPO, and in The Conversation, where Robin argues that engaging with the moral grammar of revenge—rather than dismissing it—may open pathways towards a just and enduring peace.

Beyond these research activities, Marie Robin also acts as vice-Chair of the COST Action NETSEC (Networking European Security Knowledge), a competitive EU-funded project which aims to tackle the growing fragmentation of security studies in Europe by bridging the gap between scholars and practitioners, geographical divides, and by fostering a new generation of security scholars in Europe.

At Leiden University, she teaches various courses in the Bachelor of Security Studies (Vital interests, War and Peacebuilding, Case Study Syria), as well as within the CSM master’s programme (Peace Studies: Histories, Theories and Concepts; Intelligence in a Contested Information Environment). She also supervises various theses, from bachelor to PhD.
