Lecturer in sustainability with an expertise in how climate change affects ecosystems.
Professional experience
Mariana is an ecologist specialized in plant–soil interactions and the effects of global change on ecosystems, with experience conducting field and greenhouse experiments across international research environments. Her research has focused on understanding how ecological processes can inform sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation. She obtained her master’s degree in Ecology at UFRGS in Brazil, and she holds a PhD from ETH Zurich, where she studied how phosphorus limitation drives plant species coexistence in alpine ecosystems. Alongside her research career, she has taught and supervised bachelor’s and master’s students and recently obtained her university teaching qualification (BKO). Her teaching connects ecological theory with societal challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable agriculture.
Research topic
Climate change effects on plant-soil interactions and their consequences for carbon and nutrient cycling in natural ecosystems.
