Marcella Schute is an external PhD Candidate in American History at Leiden University. She works at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS) in Middelburg. Her research project is part of the larger project "Racial Democracy: Challenges to Civic Democratic Ideals in American History." Her PhD project explores the African Apprentice Bill of 1858 and efforts by Louisiana to reopen the slave trade. She aims to place the bill in a larger context and form an understanding of how politicians and southern planters thought about black freedom in the antebellum period. Marcella completed her MA in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam in 2020 and received her BA in Liberal Arts & Sciences from University College Roosevelt (Utrecht University) in 2019.
