Mandy de Wilde is a lecturer at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology of Leiden University. The core question driving her work is how ecological sustainability plays out in local practices, and the situated harms as well as the opportunities that emerge from it.
Mandy has worked on projects about the adoption of renewable energy technologies in households across Dutch regions, environmental governance of decentralised wastewater infrastructure in the Flevopolder and Noord-Brabant, and waste management as part of green movements and sustainable cities, in Amsterdam and Leiden. Drawing on environmental anthropology, science and technology studies, and political ecology, she explores local practices, to do with energy, water and waste, and connects these to global challenges and academic debates concerning gender equity, responsible consumption and production, and multispecies justice. As sustainability challenges are complex, engaging with the many experts and stakeholders involved has been integral to her work.
Next to lecturing in Leiden, she also works as a postdoc at the Anthropology Department at the University of Amsterdam. Prior to joining Leiden, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh (2019), and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University & Research (2016 – 2018) and the Centre on Research on Environmental and Social Change at the University of Antwerp (2015). She has also been a visiting fellow at the Institute for European Ethnology at the Humboldt University Berlin (2013), the DEMAND Centre at Lancaster University (2017) and the Energy, Environment, and Sustainability Research Group at the University of Edinburgh (2018). She received her PhD-education at the Amsterdam School of Social Science Research (2015). Her dissertation connected an ethnography of everyday life in a neighbourhood to literature about the role of affects in the construction of citizenship.
