Dr. Lucien van Romburg is an Assistant Professor of Financial Law at Leiden University. He has extensive international experience having lived, worked, and studied in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Africa, the UK, Australia. His academic research and teaching lie at the intersection of law, finance, technology, and development, with a particular focus on the regulation of emerging technologies and their implications for financial markets and governance.

His work includes the recently published book ‘Digital Finance and Regulatory Competition’ (Wolters Kluwer) and academic articles featured in reputable academic publications. His scholarly work is informed by his prior professional experience as a qualified attorney (South Africa) practicing financial services regulation in London, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

Beyond academia, he works with the International Law Institute to provide regulatory expertise on asset-based finance products to multilateral organizations on projects which have spanned East, West, and Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Hong Kong, a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford as a Commonwealth Scholar, and a Bachelor of Laws (summa cum laude) from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, where he graduated top of his class.
