Lotte obtained her PhD with her research in the ERC-funded project ‘Boys will be boys?, in which she studied family emotion socialization in early childhood. Lotte’s research focuses on the role of gender norms in child rearing from early childhood to late adolescence. Currently, Lotte is a postdoctoral researcher in the FWOS-funded project ‘Tomboys and pansies’ and the ERC-funded research project ‘Girls in science’. Both studies focus on child rearing, at home and in school, in relation to the development of gendered attitudes in children.

Research

Lotte’s research currently focuses on the role of (implicit) gender norms in family interactions, the school context, and child development from early childhood to late adolescence.

•    Family and school factors that predict gendered educational pathways, i.e., boys choosing science subjects and girls choosing alpha/gamma profiles (PhD candidates: A. Kroes, A. Jehle, S. van Esveld, T. van den Rozenberg, L. Doornkamp)
•    The link between gender socialization in early childhood and religion as well as ethnic background of the family (PhD candidate: E. de Vries)
•    Sibling interactions during the early years: conflict and prosocial behavior
