Lena Kilian is an assistant professor at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML). Her work focuses on using environmentally-extended input-output analysis to estimate and analyse consumption-based emissions.

Professional experience

Before joining Leiden University, Lena worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leeds and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Prior to this, Lena completed her PhD at the University of Leeds in Data Analytics and Society, with a focus on consumption-based emissions of UK households. In addition to this she has an MSc from King’s College London in Sustainable Cities and a BSc from the University of Glasgow in Psychology with Sociology.

Research topic

Lena is particularly interested in subnational distributions of emissions to assess carbon inequalities as well as spatial differences in footprints. Moreover, from 2022-2025 she contributed to the construction of the UK’s Multi-Regional Input-Output (UKMRIO) model.
