Laila Qhistina (Layla) is a Public Prosecutor at the Attorney General's Office of Indonesia, currently pursuing her PhD at the Van Vollenhoven Institute, Faculty of Law, Leiden University.

Her PhD research, "Crime Victims' Rights to Compensation in Indonesia: The Role of the Public Prosecutor", investigates how Indonesian Public Prosecutors fulfil their legally mandated role in securing compensation and restitution for crime victims. Her doctoral research stems from her experience handling criminal cases as a practitioner. In the course of her work, she observed a persistent unease: victims of crime were legally entitled to compensation and restitution, yet in practice rarely received it. While Indonesian law increasingly obliges prosecutors to pursue restitution on behalf of victims, a persistent gap remains between these statutory obligations and what victims actually receive in practice. This gap led her to examine the tension between prosecutors' discretionary and mandatory duties in pursuing victim compensation. 

Her research is supervised by Prof. mr. dr. A. W. Bedner and Prof. Dr J.H.L.J. Jassen.
