Joy Yeonjoo Lee is Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology and Health Data Science. She received her PhD (Cum Laude) from the School of Health Professions Education at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Her research utilizes eye-tracking and data science to investigate human cognition and technology-enhanced learning (e.g., simulation-based learning, game-based learning) based on educational theories (e.g., the Medical Pause, cognitive load, 4C/ID). In particular, she has an active interest in using eye-tracking in VR/AR environments and application of AI to performance assessment and learning analytics.

Biography

Joy Yeonjoo Lee received her PhD (Cum Laude, Jeroen van Merriënboer PhD award) from the School of Health Professions Education at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Her research has focused on improving instructional design in medical education, through emerging technology and data science. Dr. Lee’s research is based on both theoretical (e.g., the Medical Pause, cognitive load, 4C/ID) and empirical studies, deeply rooted in educationl psychology. She has provided expert advice concerning instructional design, eye tracking methodology, simulation-based learning (e.g., VR/AR), and application of data science to learning analytics.

Dr. Lee has led VR Simulation and Eye-tracking Lab in Maastricht and International Community of Research on Medical Simulation (IRESIM). Prior to her PhD, she earned a MSc in cognitive science, and did her master’s project in Lund University, Sweden. She did an internship in Educational Technology Group at Lund University, working for various eye-tracking research projects in educational psychology, machine learning, and human-computer interaction.
