Overview

How does the European Union act internationally? How do its institutions and member states and other political actors shape its foreign policy? And what does the changing transatlantic relationship mean for Europe?

My research and teaching explores these questions at the intersection of European politics and international relations. I focus on EU foreign and security policy, European institutions, the European External Action Service, and EU–US relations.

I am the author of 'The Contested Diplomacy of the European External Action Service' (Routledge, 2018) and co-author of 'The European Union and the United States: Competition, Convergence and Crisis in the Global Arena' (Bloomsbury, 2026).

Before joining Leiden I was a Fellow at the Taube Centre for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences at Jagiellonian University in Krakow and DAAD Lecturer in European Security and Deputy Director of the IGES at the University of Birmingham.
