Joseph started his PhD at the department of Environmental Biology at Leiden University in early 2024. His research focuses on understanding the temporal dynamics of the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and biodiversity.
Research topic
Joseph is researching the temporal dynamics of the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and biodiversity. A range of spatial scales will be considered from the European level to a case study focussing on the dune ecosystem of Meijendel. The aim of the project is to gain a deeper understanding of fundamental ecology while also drawing out useful implications for biodiversity policy.
Professional experience
Joseph obtained his integrated master’s degree in Biological Sciences at Wadham College, University of Oxford, in 2022. Within the bachelor's course he specialised in ecology and evolutionary biology. His master's thesis focused on understanding the mechanisms through which mental health benefits are delivered by urban vegetation at a population level. This GIS focused analysis was then continued working as a research assistant at the Long Term Ecology Lab in Oxford where he investigated the role of volatile organic compounds emitted by plants on wellbeing. Joseph began his PhD at the department of Environmental Biology at Leiden University in early 2024.
