Joris (J.I.) Rotmans is an internist-nephrologist and Professor of Internal Medicine at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). Since 2010, he has been working in nephrology, with a focus on hemodialysis and kidney transplantation. He studied medicine at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam with research on vascular access for hemodialysis. During his training, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in vascular tissue engineering in Brisbane, Australia. His research focuses on innovative technological applications for patients with kidney disease, in particular on improving vascular access for hemodialysis. In addition to his clinical and research activities, he is actively involved in national and international collaborations in the field of nephrology and hemodialysis vascular access.

Academic career
Joris (JI) Rotmans, MD, PhD, is professor of Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center. He received his MD degree at the Free University in Amsterdam in 2000 and his PhD degree at Amsterdam University in 2004. The title of his thesis was ‘Therapeutic strategies to prevent stenosis in arteriovenous grafts for hemodialysis’. He completed his residency in internal medicine and Nephrology at the Amsterdam Medical Center and the Leiden University Medical Center. In 2008, he moved to Brisbane, Australia for postdoctoral research on vascular tissue engineering at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Since 2011, he is faculty member at the Department of Internal Medicine of Leiden University Medical Center. From 2018 up tot 2022, he was the chairman of the Nephrology Residency Program at LUMC. Since 2021 he serves a head of the subdepartment of Nephrology.
His main research interest has been in the area of nephrology and vascular medicine, with a focus on vascular access for hemodialysis.
